The first term of 2023 has been another busy one at the school. We have seen a number of new staff make a great start to the year, as have our new students.
One of the initiatives at our school this year is the appointment of Ms Michelle Phillips as Work Place Learning Coordinator. Ms Phillips works in this role one day per week. The work she will be doing is about finding a match between a students’ interests and a work placement on one or two days per week, with a local employer. This is a great option for some students as it gets them out into the workplace to “try” a job and is often a great introduction into the world of work. It can also lead to students working towards a School Based Traineeship or an Apprenticeship.
The organisation of a work placement does take time and as you can understand, a lot of paperwork. Students also need to complete some industry requirements before they can undertake a work placement, but this can usually be done reasonably quickly. In my experience, many students who begin this program really go on to shine as it gives their self-esteem a boost and they often really enjoy being outside of a classroom and in a different environment. At this stage, Ms Phillips’ focus has been on Year 10 students but as time goes on, this may extend to others. If this is something you would like more information on for your student, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Phillips on 9761 0100.
Our Year 7 and 9 students are to be congratulated on their efforts and attitude during the recent NAPLAN testing. Last year our school saw improvement in all NAPLAN results and we were above “like” schools in most of the test areas for both year groups. We hope that this year will yield us even greater success as we progress on our improvement journey.
We were very proud of Meg Stewart-Crump and Rowan Asplin this week as they were selected to participate in an interview to be a part of the WA Student Council. This is a highly competitive process as students from across the state nominated. The WA Student Council provides advice directly to the Minister for Education, so it is a highly sought after and responsible position. Both students have done extremely well to be selected for interview. Bridgetown High School was the only school in the region to have two students make it this far in the process. We look forward to hearing early next term if they have been successful. A big thank you to Mr Dareff who has supported the students in the process.
Libby Burgess is doing an amazing job of leading our P & C and she is supported by a great group of enthusiastic and hardworking members. At our recent P & C meeting, the Committee agreed to fund a range of new, modern and functional furniture for our school library. Our library is already looking fabulous since the recent upgrade, and this furniture will add to the new look and make the library a really inviting place for students. We would not be able to purchase this furniture without the support of the P & C, so please get behind the group as they run the canteen at the Bridgetown Trots this Sunday.
Best wishes for a Happy Easter and a break from the routine during the coming holidays.
Kind regards
Mrs C. A Thorsby

Kolbang
The Kolbang crew have had a wonderful time this term. They have been working on some amazing art projects with Mrs Reid and making some wood work creations with Mr Alexander. Marlin and Logan assembled four new janitor trolleys which are being used by our hard working cleaners. We have also been cooking every Friday and have made a range of yummy goodies including choc chip cookies, cheese and vegemite scrolls and sausage rolls. The Kolbang veggie garden is also up and running again with thanks to our lovely gardeners Allie and Kim. We are looking forward to more hands on learning and lots more fun next term.
